A little bit about me

Hi, I’m Felicity Johnson. I have a Bachelor of Social Work (Hons) and a Master of Counselling Social Work from UNSW, and hold current registration as an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker. Prior to social work, I completed a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) with a major in Gender Studies, which sparked my interest in social justice and ultimately led me to social work. Providing safety for people who have experienced stigma and marginalisation is core to the work that I do.

My counselling career began in youth cancer, providing support to young people who were navigating the stress of their own cancer diagnosis, or that of a family member. I counselled young people who were facing terminal illness, carer stress and family bereavement, and who were often feeling isolated and misunderstood by the people around them. I fell in love with grief and loss work, which led me to working with adults in a specialist bereavement counselling service. I have provided bereavement counselling to a diverse range of clients, including people bereaved by illness, accident, suicide and homicide. From here, I have taken my interest in bereavement and my passion for working with the LGBTQ+ community to commencing a PhD in bereavement, and working in gender-affirming healthcare. I’m queer and female-identified, and I’m an ally to the trans and gender diverse community.

For me, providing counselling isn’t about ‘fixing’ or ‘curing’ you. I understand that the things that we struggle with, and the ways that we’ve learnt to cope with those struggles, are a product of what we’ve experienced and survived. Counselling is a safe space for you to connect with another human being and not be judged for who you are, how you think or how you live. But if you’ve come to counselling then I assume there’s something that isn’t feeling right for you and there’s something you want to change. I’m here to companion you through that change and offer some suggestions of how you might learn new ways to cope and adapt to life’s various challenges.
