No, seeing a counsellor is a personal choice. Many people find counselling helpful, whilst others deal with their life stressors in other ways. Research has shown that the most influential factor in the success of counselling is the client themselves - so if counselling doesn’t feel like the right fit for you, or you don’t feel ready for it right now, then that’s a valid choice to make.
That said, counselling can be useful to increase self-awareness, build new skills (such as emotional regulation skills or communication skills), have a safe space to explore and express your feelings, work through a problem, or process a traumatic event with a qualified professional.

I use different therapies and interventions flexibly, because no two clients are the same. I have training in a range of different therapy types, but my favourites to draw from are Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT). I work from a trauma-informed, attachment and systemic lens.
Sometimes clients have previous experience in a therapy that they found really useful (or absolutely hated) - if this is you, please let me know, so that I can adapt my approach to best suit you. I’ll bring the training, but you’ll be the expert in the room.

An Accredited Mental Health Social Worker is a registered social worker who has successfully undertaken an accreditation process by the Australian Association of Social Workers and is deemed to have clinical expertise in providing mental health interventions. Accredited Mental Health Social Workers must meet minimum requirements for clinical experience and continuing professional development, ensuring that their knowledge and practice remains up to date and evidence based.
Calling myself an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker lets you know what my clinical background is but, really, I’m just like any other counsellor!

Yes, as an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, I am a registered Medicare provider. You may be eligible to claim a rebate of $85.20 for up to 10 sessions in a calendar year with a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP. If you would like to claim through Medicare, please organise a Mental Health Treatment Plan with your GP prior to attending your appointment.
Please note that I am unable to process the rebate for you and the full $200 fee must be paid at your appointment. I will provide you with a paid invoice after the session that you can use to claim your rebate direct from Medicare.
-
No, you don’t need a referral unless you would like to claim a Medicare rebate. Please speak to your GP about your eligibility for a Mental Health Treatment Plan.
-
Appointments that are cancelled within 24 hours of the scheduled appointment time will be charged 50% of the session fee ($100). A reminder SMS and email will be sent 48 hours before the scheduled appointment time, allowing plenty of time to get in touch if you would like to reschedule or cancel your appointment. Cancellations can be made via phone/voicemail, SMS or email. Please note that Medicare rebates can only be claimed for attended appointments.
